Roundkick Rumble VI, Lakeview, IA
July 22, 2006
Back in Lakeview, Iowa for Roundkick Rumble VI, Pete and Pam Peterson hosted "Iowa versus Illinois". The fighters were ready and the crowd was enthusiastic. The night was electric.
Bout 1:
Junior International Rules Exhibition
Isaac Riesselman,
Team Roundkick vs. Zach Wells, Team DeVore
Round 1--Two young fighters started the night in a Junior’s exhibition. Each came throwing leather with the intention of firing up the crowd early. The exchanges were even until Riesselman put a well placed foot into Wells’ stomach knocking his wind out and ending the match. Both fighters were applauded for their warrior spirit.
Bout 2:
Men’s Light Cruiserweight International Rules
Able Mahaffey,
2-4-0, Team Roundkick vs. Rick Christie, 1-1-0, Team DeVore
Round 1--A feeling out round for both fighters; each kicking the other’s legs and body. The edge in the round possibly going to Christie for heavier punches to Mahaffey’s head and body.
Round 2--Mahaffey came out determined with powerful leg kicks and stronger punches allowing him to back Christie up at times.
Round 3--Two tired fighters started the last round trying to get the upper-hand in a very close fight. They exchanged kicks and punches in an effort to win the round and possibly the fight. The judges scored a close decision in favor of Rick Christie.
Bout 3:
Men’s Middleweight MMA
Dan Cromer,
0-1-0, Team Roundkick vs. Chris Perry, 1-0-0, Team DeVore
Round 1—Perry opened the match with punching combinations. Cromer shot first, but it was a failed attempt. Thirty seconds into the round, Perry dropped Cromer. Perry, on top of Cromer, began repeatedly punching Cromer in the head. Cromer could not stop him or respond. At 48 seconds into round 1, referee Mike Storm stopped the match…winner—Chris Perry.
Bout 4:
Junior International Rules Exhibition
Tyler Wuebker,
Team Roundkick vs. Mason Christie, Team DeVore
Round 1—What exhibition? This was more of a clinic on how to fight with your head and your heart. There was a weight difference, but neither fighter cared. They opened by targeting each others’ heads. Christie was the first to change the tempo with a reverse side kick that missed. Wuebker responded with a spinning backfist that connected. Both fighters were obviously capable of fancier kicks, but the basics are what worked.
Round 2—Again, the head was a favorite target with the fighters swinging wide. Once they settled down and began kicking and punching the crowd got excited. In the middle of the round, Christie raised his left arm high to touch gloves, but it looked to the referee and to his opponent that he was trying to bait Wuebker. Wuebker took advantage of the raised arm and jabbed cleanly to Christie’s ribs. Christie got right back in the game with a jab/cross combination.
Round 3—Christie again threw a jab/cross combination to the head and body. He moved well around the ring forcing Wuebker to use his long legs to reach this opponent. Wuebker was able to tag Christie in the head a couple of times which made Christie blink. Wuebker followed up with a flying side kick. Christie, unbothered, punched until the final bell.
Bout 5: Men’s Middleweight
International Rules
Clayton Skidmore,
1-0-0, Team Roundkick vs. Chad Walker, 0-1-0, Pekin Martial Arts
Round 1--Skidmore attacked Walker from the opening bell. 3 separate right hooks to the head put Walker down 3 times in the round awarding Skidmore a victory when referee Terri Storm stopped the fight because of the 3 knockdown rule. Winner by TKO, Clayton Skidmore at 1:40 of the first round.
Bout 6:
Men’s Super Welterweight
Adam “Pup” Brown,
2-2-0, Team Roundkick vs. Casey Wiley, 0-1-0, Team DeVore
Round 1--An even round going back and forth with neither fighter taking the advantage.
Round 2---Brown came out the aggressor with powerful body and head punches backing Wiley up for a good portion of the round.
Round 3---A real battle with both fighters giving as good as they got. Each tried to win the round with powerful punches to the others body but both fighters refused to back-up. Going to the judges scorecards, a close decision was awarded to Adam Brown.
Bout 7:
Men’s Light Heavyweight MMA
Jaylon Lloyd,
0-1-0, Team Roundkick vs. Matt Gotts, 1-0-0, Team DeVore
Round1—Within the opening seconds of the round, Lloyd shot and took down Gotts. A furious battle on the ground by Lloyd ensued. The referee told the fighters to watch elbows in the throat which slowed the pace. At 1:36 in the round, the referee stood the fighters up for no activity and started them again. A few kicks and punches continued until Lloyd took Gotts to his knees. Gotts almost had a choke on Lloyd, but appeared to let it go. Lloyd was able to get Gotts on his back and the round ended.
Round 2—Lloyd immediately shot low and Gotts ended up on top. The fighters stood up after Lloyd went through the rope. Lloyd again tried to shoot, but Gotts punched effectively keeping Lloyd off of him. Lloyd again shot lower and ended up below Gotts and both were on their knees. Gotts continued to attack and Lloyd ended up on the officials table. Lloyd got back into the ring but turned around slowly. He obviously was tired, but still had plenty of fight as he backed Gotts into a corner. Gotts, following his corner’s instructions began kneeing Lloyd. Lloyd tripped and Gotts pounced on him with punches.
Round 3—The bell rang, but Lloyd was unable to respond due to a dislocated elbow. The fight was awarded to Gotts.
Bout 8:
Men’s Middleweight International Rules
Jody Brinks,
1-0-0, Team Roundkick vs. Josh Christie, 0-2-0, Team DeVore
Round 1--Christie dominated with vicious leg kicks that hurt and backed Brincks up the whole round.
Round 2--Christie appeared to tire himself out after the first round. Brinks came out cautiously to start the round but grew more determined when Christie didn’t kick him like he did in the first round. Brinks’ confidence grew as he was able to get inside and throw hard punches to Christie’s head and body.
Round 3--A close round with strong punches from Brinks and leg kicks from Christie. The fight ended very close with the judges awarding a split decision to Jody Brinks.
Bout 9: Men’s Super
Heavyweight International Rules
Juan "Crazy" Mendietta, 1-0-0, Team Roundkick vs Martin Wells,
0-1-0, Team DeVore
Round 1--Both fighters threw a lot of punches in the round but neither was able to get the upper-hand in a very close round.
Round 2--Mendietta started the round with leg kicks followed by straight lefts and rights to Wells’ face. A right hook knocked Wells down causing him to land on his shoulder and injuring it. With the injured shoulder, Wells was unable to continue causing the bout to be stopped at 1:26 in the second round. Winner by TKO, Juan Mendietta.
Bout 10: Men’s Middleweight
MMA
Eric Schroeder, 1-1-0, Team Roundkick vs Mike Perry, 1-1-0,
Team DeVore
Round 1—Schroeder got things going quickly with a series of punches. This match looked like it was going to be over quickly, in favor of Shroeder, but as Perry responded with a left-hook to Schroeder’s head, it stunned Schroeder knocking him to his hands and knees. While Schroeder was down, Perry attacked him with more punches to Schroeder’s head. Schroeder was not defending himself and the referee stopped the fight 22 seconds into round 1. The win by TKO went to Perry.
Bout 11:
Men’s Light Cruiserweight International Rules
Danny Sturm,
1-0-0, Team Roundkick vs. Richard Connor, 0-1-0, Pekin Martial Arts
Round 1—Sturm was very ready for the fight and started with jabs. Connnor responded with repeat round kicks. Sturm mirrors the kicks backing up Connor. Both began punching in close. Connor was breathing heavy and Sturm kept punching. Just as the referee was about to stop and give Connor an 8 count, Connor comes out of nowhere and throws a round kick to Sturm’s abs. Sturm again punches, Connor again was unable to respond, just as the referee was about to start an 8 count, Connor again throws a round kick to the abs. Talk about digging deep! At the bell, both fighters were punching.
Round 2—Early in round, the fighters’ arms get tangled and Sturm uses his available hand for multiple hooks to Connor’s body. Connor was exhausted from the punches. After being separated, Sturm delivered a right hook spiraling Connor down on to the canvas. After the 8 count, Sturm offered a series of punches followed by a right round kick to Connor’s head. Connor was obviously stunned and received another 8 count.
Round 3—Connor definitely has the warrior spirit. After a tough two rounds, he started the round ready and evading well. Eventually, Sturm was able to catch Connor with a hook to the head followed by a series of combinations. Connor tried to respond, but was ineffective. Again, the referee gave Connor a standing 8 count. Connor stuck with it and Sturm was slowing. At 1:58 of round , Sturm was again able to connect with Connor to the point that referee Mike Storm stopped the fight.
Bout 12: Men’s Heavyweight
Muay Thai Rules
Cory Schmidgall,
1-1-0, Team Roundkick vs. Justin Abate, 3-0-0, Pekin Martial Arts
Round 1—The only Muay Thai match of the night was quick, but exciting. Schmidgall took an early lead by repeatedly connecting hard knees in the clench. Abate appeared to be uncertain as to what to do during the exchanges. Abate quickly figured it out and delivered his only necessary aggressive move of the fight. Abate knocked out Schmidgall at 1:05 of round 1 with a powerful right-hook to the jaw.
